COMMISSIONS
The commission process is designed to make sure that you end up with a piece of artwork that you love and which fits beautifully in your home. To get to this result, I’ll need a healthy balance of clear guidelines around your preferences, creative freedom, and your feedback at key moments along the way. Each step is described below.
-
I. Ideas
We begin with an initial consultation - an opportunity to talk about the considerations for the work, including both creative aspects (such as colours you are drawn to, stylistic features to incorporate or avoid, what you want the painting to convey), and practical aspects (such as the size, space, framing and your budget). This typically takes between 45-60 mins.
-
II. Go Ahead
After our meeting, I’ll share a written summary of what we’ve talked about along with a fee and timeline for the work. If you are happy to proceed, I will ask you to transfer a non-refundable deposit of 50% of the fee.
-
III. Snippets
Before I get to work on your painting, I will produce a series of small sketches / snippets on paper. I’ll share these with you and ask for your feedback on elements like the colours, composition and types of shapes and marks used.
-
IV. Production
While I’m working on your commission, I probably won’t share regular updates or previews of the work. This is so that I can work freely, and so that you benefit from seeing a full, coherent composition once it is finished.
-
V. Viewing
Once I am happy with the painting, I will invite you to my studio for a viewing. At this stage, we can discuss your thoughts and any small revisions that you would like me to make. I would be happy to make up to two rounds of revisions.
-
VI. Completion
When you’re happy with the work, I will varnish, frame (if applicable), and deliver it to you. At this stage, the remaining 50% of the balance will be due. If you’re happy for me to do so, I would also love to take some photos of the artwork in situ!
It is really important to me that you love your artwork. If for whatever reason you are not happy with the result, you are welcome to redeem your deposit against another painting, or we can work towards a different commission in the future.
