Welcome to the very first edition of Notes from the Studio. My aim is to share a newsletter like this twice a year with updates on recent projects, experiments in progress, and upcoming events. Please let me know what you think, and thank you for subscribing!

STUDIO UPDATES

Spring Open Studio

The Open Studio event in May was a great success - thank you to all who came along, many of whom are the pioneer subscribers to this newsletter.

As someone who is pretty new to painting (and very new to exhibiting!) these events can feel daunting. But the chance to meet so many interesting people, the excellent conversations, and all the encouragement have been wonderful. I’m also very lucky to be a part of Gipsy Hill Studios, which is such a supportive community.

Commissions

An enormous THANK YOU to all those who have bought or commissioned a painting this year. I’ve enjoyed working on each and every one of the five commissions - three abstract paintings which called for bold shapes and bright, contrasting colours, and two smaller impressionist-style works, which were a fun and challenging departure from the abstract work.

It’s really rewarding to see these paintings now hanging in their new homes. You can browse photos of them online, including some of the close-up details.

ON THE EASEL

Recently I’ve been experimenting with:

• Building up stronger layers of texture using mediums like modelling paste,

• Collage, using fragments of some of my smaller studies,

• Sketching out composition ideas before diving into a new painting, and

• Creating bespoke wooden panels to mount canvases on.

You’ll see work incorporating these new techniques on display in my upcoming show—details below!

WHAT’S NEXT

Crystal Palace Artists’ Open House

I’m really looking forward to participating in the Crystal Palace Artists Open House for the first time this year. Over 70 local artists will be opening their doors across two weekends. Come along to see some of my new work!

Dates: 27th & 28th September and 4th & 5th October, 10am - 5pm

Location: Gipsy Hill Studios, 14 Paddock Gardens, SE19 3SB

There is also a preview exhibition at the Paxton Centre, Anerley Hill on right now, where pieces from many participating artists are on show.
